In the night
There is always pain in the unknown,
a mysterious cloud of darkness,
weighing down on me in the night.
The dreams keep me restless,
waking abruptly in a cold sweat,
checking to make sure I’m home.
My eyes are heavy and tearful,
but my mind cannot stop long enough
to allow my body to relax again.
Do you think God can hear me,
over the cries of everyone else,
the pleas ringing in his ears?
I lie back on my pillow,
lower my lids once again,
and prepare for another long night.
