On the search

Hello everyone! It's been a tough couple of days since my mom left. We're very close, so it was wonderful to have her company and see her enjoying time with Juliana. Juliana is still saying "Nana" and giving me that perplexed look when she walks in the guest room. I can't wait for her to come back out to visit us.

Now that I'm nearing the end of my online TESOL course, I've started looking for jobs. Got a few more offers for China and Korea, but nothing for Singapore yet. I'm hoping to get lucky enough to be considered for a position similar to the one in China...excellent pay, great opportunity and good hours. So if you read this and know of anything, let me know!!!

Busy week ahead...I tried to fill it up to take my mind off missing my mom and family. Juliana has her two playgroups, and a doctor's appointment. She just cut another tooth today as well, poor thing!! That makes it twelve little teeth now filling her mouth. We're also going to get together with some fellow Americans, yay!! And an ASA meeting as well, that I'm hoping I won't back out of at the last minute.

It was a mellow weekend. We took Juliana to IMM to play in the water yesterday and hung out at the apartment today with some swimming this afternoon. Juliana is exhausted and cranky with that tooth trying to make its way through her gums. But it was nice to have some family time at home!

Schools in Singapore use English as a medium of instruction, so I suspect that the demand for basic English is not high.

I know that after class tuition is extremely popular. Most parents like their children to learn more outside their usual class. Tuition classes on Sciences, Mathematics, Languages are extremely popular.

If you are looking to teach English, providing outside of school hours "General Paper" and "English" are pretty popular in Singapore. You may want to look for tuition centers. I know there are some education centers that provide such services, one of my friends work in such center. There should be one in Jurong.

These may also look good for you? Look up for these education centers. There should be a few in Jurong.

You may find some work in such places too....

But there could be some demand among the seniors, who are trying learn English and get works from places like MacDonald etc.....

If you have a chance to speak with your local Member of Parliament at the meet the resident session, he can tell you more about such opportunity (then you can work close to home).

Or check out the latest news on the local papers. The government often publicize training directions for the locals who have lost their jobs, and this recent recession will definitely displace many, and this may provide some opportunities (I don't know about teaching English, but if you have other skills, the government might be interested).

Hope these help!

A few more.

Private tuition rates can range from S$80 per hour to S$300 per hour, depending on your qualifications.

Some schools only need basic qualifications, those that you can demand higher pay (normally full-time positions) will need the Ministry of Education certifications. The MOE website should have details.

This may be another job opportunity for you, advising Singaporeans who are interested to pursue degrees in the US. Your nationality already qualifies you for this job.... (if there're vacancies).

Enjoy your job search.... if your job search is not limited to English, I think there are plenty out there... cheers!
